NYC Parking Rules Explained: Street Cleaning, Signs & Tips

Parking in New York is confusing even for locals. One of the most infamous rules is Alternate Side Parking (ASP) — a street cleaning regulation you must follow or risk a fine. ASP means you can’t park on certain sides of the street during posted cleaning hours, and rules vary by block.

NYC parking signs are your roadmap. Carefully read every sign before you park — meters, ASP schedules, and restricted times are all posted right there. If you miss a sign, you could get a costly ticket.

ASP is suspended on some legal holidays and often on Sundays, but the meter and other rules usually still apply.

Illegal parking — like double parking or parking within 15 feet of fire hydrants — will also result in fines or towing.

Staying informed and using parking apps or maps can help you avoid tickets and find your way through New York’s maze of regulations.
